From the foreword

It gives me great pleasure, on the occasion of Algonquin Park's 100th birthday, to introduce this long-awaited collection of essays from the Park's famous newsletter, The Raven. For 34 years now, The Raven has been informing, edifying, and amusing a whole generation of Park visitors. Every week in the summer hundreds of copies go out to lodges, camps, newspapers, and radio stations, where their contents are passed on to countless numbers of people who might not otherwise remain unaware of the Park's enormously rich natural and human heritage. Every fall thousands of complete sets of all 12 issues for the year are mailed out to people around the world who, through the pages of The Raven, will relive their visit to the Park and gain further insights into its ecology and history. And yet, because The Raven is a weekly newsletter, most of its articles, however interesting they may be, quickly disappear from view and become unavailable to succeeding Park visitors and the general public. Only a few well-organized people can boast of having a complete set of all the original issues, and even in these cases, individual articles are difficult to index and retrieve for subsequent reference. Understandably then, there have been numerous requests over the years for a collection of Raven articles in book form. The Board of Directors of The Friends of Algonquin Park needed no convincing about the merits of such a project, and the result is what you are now setting out to enjoy. -- William C. Calvert
